چکیده

Transport biofuels derived from biogenic material are used for substituting fossil fuels, 1 thereby abating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Numerous competing conversion options exist to 2 produce biofuels, with differing GHG emissions and costs. In this paper analysis and modelling of the 3 long-term development of GHG abatement and relative GHG abatement cost competitiveness between 4 crop-based biofuels in Germany is carried out. Presently dominant conventional biofuels and advanced 5 liquid biofuels were found not to be competitive compared to the substantially higher yielding options 6 available: sugar beet based ethanol for the short to medium term least-cost option and Substitute 7 Natural Gas (SNG) for the medium to long term. The competitiveness of SNG was found to depend 8 highly on the emissions development of the power mix. Silage maize based biomethane was found 9 competitive on a land area basis, but not on an energetic basis. Due to land limitations as well as cost 10 and GHG uncertainty, a stronger focus on the land use of crop-based biofuels should be laid in policy. 11

Cost of abating greenhouse gas emissions with cellulosic ethanol.

We develop an integrated framework to determine and compare greenhouse gas (GHG) intensities and production costs of cellulosic ethanol derived from corn stover, switchgrass, and miscanthus grown on high and low quality soils for three representative counties in the Eastern United States. This information is critical for assessing the cost-effectiveness of utilizing cellulosic ethanol for mitig...

Fossil electricity and CO2 sequestration: how natural gas prices, initial conditions and retrofits determine the cost of controlling CO2 emissions

Stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations will require significant cuts in electric sector carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The ability to capture and sequester CO2 in a manner compatible with today’s fossil-fuel based power generation infrastructure offers a potentially low-cost contribution to a larger climate change mitigation strategy. The extent to which carbon capture and ...

How carbon pricing changes the relative competitiveness of low-carbon baseload generating technologies

There is wide public debate about which electricity generating technologies will best be suited to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Sometimes this debate ignores real-world practicalities and leads to over-optimistic conclusions. Here we define and apply a set of fit-for-service criteria to identify technologies capable of supplying baseload electricity and reducing GHGs by amounts and wi...

Multiple-pollutant cost-effectiveness of greenhouse gas mitigation measures in the UK agriculture

This paper develops multiple-pollutant marginal abatement cost curve analysis to identify an optimal set of greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation measures considering the trade-offs and synergies with other environmental pollutants. The analysis is applied to UK agriculture, a sector expected to make a contribution to the national GHG mitigation effort. Previous analyses using marginal abatement cost...
